Custom Railing Services in San Jose and the South Bay

Railing Services in San Jose From One Metal Shop

San Jose Custom Railing provides railing services in San Jose and across Santa Clara County in all four main materials: wrought iron, 316 stainless cable, tempered or laminated glass, and powder-coated aluminum. We also build interior stair railings, ADA and commercial handrails, and custom gates, and we repair railings that are still worth saving. Because one shop handles every material, the recommendation you get is based on your house, your view and your budget rather than on whatever a single-material installer happens to sell.

The path is the same on every job. We measure on site for free, draw the railing to scale, check it against the California Building Code and California Residential Code (42-inch guards, the 4-inch sphere rule, 34–38 inch handrails), then fabricate, finish and install it. If the city or your HOA wants drawings, we prepare them. Price ranges are published on each service page and in our railing cost calculator, so you can budget before anyone visits. Matching the Right Service to Your South Bay Home

Most San Jose projects fall into a handful of patterns. Here is where we usually point people first:

Managing a whole property instead of one house? Our railing solutions for multifamily owners, HOAs and contractors cover phased balcony replacement, bid packages and repeatable details across many units.

Code, Permits and Fire Zones We Plan Around

A guard is required wherever a walking surface sits more than 30 inches above grade, and it must be 42 inches tall with no opening that passes a 4-inch sphere. Residential guards and handrails must resist a 200-pound concentrated load at the top. We design to those numbers on every drawing, then confirm local requirements with San José's Building Division or the building department in your city. Replacing more than about half of an existing guard is commonly treated as a replacement that has to meet current code.

Fire maps changed recently too. San José adopted the state's 2025 Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps on June 17, 2025, and parts of the east and south San Jose foothills are now mapped High or Very High. Metal and tempered glass railings are noncombustible, which is worth weighing on any deck near the hills. Our San Jose railing permit guide explains what usually needs a permit.

Where We Work in Santa Clara County

We install railings in San Jose, Santa Clara, Campbell, Milpitas, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Cupertino and Sunnyvale. Each city runs its own permit counter and design rules, from hillside privacy standards in Saratoga and Los Gatos to Eichler guidelines in Sunnyvale and Cupertino, so we plan drawings around the department that will review them.

FAQ

Questions, Answered

Straight answers on cost, code, permits and materials. Still unsure? Call and ask.

Do you fabricate the railings yourselves?

Yes. We draw each railing, then cut, weld and finish the metal parts in our own shop before installing them. Glass panels are cut and tempered to order by a glass supplier from our measurements, and we install them on hardware we set. Building in-house lets us match heights, spacing and finishes to your site instead of adapting a kit.

Which railing material is best for a South Bay home?

It depends on the spot. Cable and glass protect views on hillside and foothill decks. Wrought iron suits porches, balconies and stairs on older homes. Aluminum works well for HOAs and multifamily buildings because it will not rust and comes in approved colors. All four are noncombustible, which matters in the parts of San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga and Cupertino mapped as fire hazard zones.

Do you help with permits and HOA approval?

Yes. We prepare the drawings and details building departments ask for, such as guard heights, opening sizes and post anchorage, plus the drawings and finish samples many HOAs require for architectural review. Requirements differ from city to city across Santa Clara County, so we confirm what your address needs before work starts.

How much does a custom railing cost in San Jose?

Installed prices in 2026 run roughly $50–$200 per linear foot for aluminum, $65–$135 for standard wrought iron, $75–$260 for cable and $150–$600 for glass. Corners, stairs, hillside access and permit fees push numbers up. These are ranges only; a free on-site estimate gives you a firm price.

Do you work on apartment and condo buildings?

Yes. SB 721 requires inspections of wood-supported balconies, decks, stairs and their railings more than 6 feet above ground on buildings with three or more units, and the first deadline of January 1, 2026 has passed. San José also runs its own Exterior Elevated Elements (E3) page. We handle the railing repairs and replacements that inspection reports call for.
