Aluminum Railings in San Jose for Decks, Balconies and Townhomes

We design, fabricate and install aluminum railings in San Jose for single-family decks, front porches, townhome balconies and apartment walkways across Santa Clara County. Aluminum doesn't form red rust the way steel does, it weighs roughly a third as much as steel, and an oven-cured powder coat lets us hit the exact color an HOA has already signed off on. It sits in the practical middle: tougher than wood, cheaper than glass or cable, lighter than iron.

San Jose has plenty of the housing aluminum suits best. Census ACS 2020–24 figures put about 11% of the city's 345,066 housing units in single-family attached townhomes and roughly 113,000 units in buildings with three or more units, most of them with balconies, landings or walkways that need a guard. Every one of those guards answers to the same two numbers: 42 inches tall, and no opening a 4-inch sphere can pass through.

What's Included in an Aluminum Railing Project

  • A free site visit to measure every run, record deck or balcony height, and check the framing or slab where each post will land.
  • Scaled drawings showing post spacing, rail height and infill gaps, with powder-coat color chips for you or your HOA board.
  • Fabrication of posts, rails and pickets or panels from structural aluminum extrusions in our shop.
  • Powder coating in a stock color or a custom match to an existing railing or approved chip.
  • Installation with stainless steel fasteners and sealed post bases, on wood framing or concrete.
  • Removal and haul-away of the old railing.
  • A written record of the profile, color code and mounting detail, so later replacements on the property match the first ones.

When Aluminum Is the Right Call

These are the situations where we usually point people toward aluminum:

  • Painted steel balcony rails that flake, bubble or leave orange streaks down the stucco below.
  • Wood deck rails that have dried, split and loosened. About 91% of San Jose's rain falls November through April (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), so wood spends half the year baking dry.
  • Townhome or condo balconies where the HOA wants one color and one profile on every unit.
  • Apartment balconies flagged for railing work in an SB 721 report.
  • A guard shorter than 42 inches, or pickets set wider than 4 inches apart.

Not sure whether to fix or replace? Our railing repair service can answer that on the same visit.

Aluminum Railing Specs: Profiles, Colors and Options

Aluminum comes in more looks than most people expect. These are the profiles we fabricate most often in San Jose:

ProfileLookWhere it fits
Square picketClassic, iron-like from the streetPorches, decks, front steps

Posts are sized and spaced so the top rail resists the 200-pound concentrated load the California Residential Code sets for guards, and pickets are set so a 4-inch sphere can't pass. Standard colors include black, bronze, white and textured finishes, and we can match a custom color from an HOA chip.

Guard Rules for Aluminum Railings in San Jose

A guard is required where a walking surface sits more than 30 inches above the grade below, and it must stand 42 inches tall. Openings can't pass a 4-inch sphere (6 inches at the triangle under a stair rail). The top rail must resist a 200-pound concentrated load, infill must resist 50 pounds on a 1-square-foot area, and commercial guards add 50 pounds per linear foot. Stair handrails sit 34–38 inches above the nosing. Confirm your project with your building department.

Replacing more than about half of an existing guard is commonly treated as a replacement that must meet current code, so a partial fix on an old 36-inch balcony rail may not be an option. Verify with the building division before you plan around it.

On apartment buildings with three or more units, SB 721 requires inspection of wood-supported balconies, decks, stairs and walkways more than 6 feet above ground, including their railings. The first deadline, January 1, 2026, has passed. San José's E3 page, part of Code Enforcement's Multiple Housing Program, says immediate hazards go to the owner and the City within 15 days.

Aluminum Near the Baylands and in South Bay HOAs

Bayside air. Homes near the Alviso and Sunnyvale baylands get damp, salt-tinged marine air, and north San Jose and Milpitas sit along the same shoreline. Bare painted steel struggles there. Aluminum skips the red-rust problem entirely, and we pair it with stainless fasteners so the hardware doesn't bleed stains onto the deck or stucco.

Townhome communities. Milpitas has the newest housing in the area (median year built 1987, about 35% built since 2000) and the highest townhome share at 20%. Santa Clara and Sunnyvale put roughly half their housing in buildings of three or more units. Many HOAs require architectural review before a railing changes, so we bring drawings and coated samples to the board. Our guide to HOA railing approval in San Jose covers what committees usually ask for.

Valley heat. NOAA normals put the July average high at 80.8°F at San Jose's airport and 82.2°F in central San Jose. Light colors stay cooler to the hand on a west-facing deck than black does.

Aluminum Railing Cost in San Jose

Powder-coated aluminum typically runs $50–$200 per linear foot installed, and most single-home projects land between $400 and $4,800. Within that range:

  • Standard square pickets in a stock color sit around $50–$90 per foot.
  • Custom colors, drink rails or decorative posts run about $90–$140.
  • Architectural profiles and fully custom fabrication reach $140–$200.
  • Each corner or turn adds roughly 20–30%, and stair runs cost more than level runs.
  • Permits run roughly $50–$500 depending on the city, and upper-floor access adds labor.

HOA-spec finishes push prices toward the high end, and townhome or apartment work is priced per building after a survey. The free on-site measure sets the real price. Call (408) 409-8723 to book it.

Why Choose Us for Aluminum Railings

Hardware Chosen for Bay Air

Near the Alviso, Milpitas and Sunnyvale baylands, the fasteners fail before the aluminum does. Every aluminum railing we install goes in with stainless steel hardware and sealed post bases, and cable infill uses 316 stainless. Powder coat is oven-cured, not brushed on. You won't find orange streaks running down your stucco a few winters later because a plated screw gave up. If an existing post base is already corroding, we show you at the estimate.

HOA Packets That Get Approved

Many South Bay HOAs require architectural review before a balcony or deck railing changes. We prepare scaled drawings with heights and gaps called out, a written material and finish spec, and physical powder-coat samples rather than a printed swatch. If the committee wants to ask questions, we can attend. A complete packet is the fastest way past review, and you keep a copy for the next owner or board.

Measured Against Code First

Every drawing is checked against the 42-inch guard height, the 4-inch sphere rule and the 200-pound top-rail load before any aluminum is cut. We probe the framing or slab where each post lands, because a strong post is only as strong as what holds it. You approve the heights and gaps in writing, and our licensed, insured crew installs exactly what you signed.

Aluminum Railings Across Santa Clara County

We install aluminum railings throughout San Jose, from north San Jose condos to Evergreen and Silver Creek townhomes. In Milpitas the work is mostly newer townhome balconies, while Santa Clara and Sunnyvale bring apartment and condo walkways by the building. We also build for single-family decks in Campbell and Cupertino.

FAQ

Questions, Answered

Straight answers on cost, code, permits and materials. Still unsure? Call and ask.

Will an aluminum railing rust near the bay?

Aluminum doesn't form red rust the way steel does. Bare aluminum can develop a dull white oxide, but powder coat seals the surface. Near the Alviso and Sunnyvale baylands the weak point is usually the fasteners, so we install with stainless steel hardware and seal the post bases.

Is aluminum strong enough for a second-story balcony?

Yes, when the system is engineered for it. Properly sized aluminum posts, spaced correctly and anchored into solid framing or concrete, are built to resist the 200-pound concentrated load at the top rail and stand 42 inches tall. Most strength problems come from weak attachment points, so we check the framing before we install.

Can you match the railing color our HOA already approved?

In most cases, yes. We take a sample from the existing railing or the HOA's approved chip to our powder coater, match it, and show the board a coated sample before production. We record the color code so future replacements match. If the old rail has faded, we match the approved chip, not the weathered paint.

Should I choose aluminum or wrought iron?

Aluminum costs less, weighs less, won't rust and suits townhome and condo work. Wrought iron is heavier, stiffer and better for scrolls, forged details and a traditional look. On a simple picket railing, many people can't tell them apart from the street. We bring samples of both to your free estimate.

Do I need a permit to replace a balcony railing in San Jose?

It depends on the scope. Replacing more than about half of an existing guard is commonly treated as a replacement that must meet current code, and some jobs need a permit. Check with the City of San Jose building division for your address. We supply drawings and specs for the permit or HOA application.
